Deloitte identified that the leadership challenge in organisations has grown to a crisis level. In 2015, 86 percent of companies globally cite ‘gaps in their leadership pipeline, as one of their top three issues and these gaps are occurring at all levels of the organisation’. (The Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends 2015).

These gaps can be filled by a greater awareness of Emotional Intelligence which is ’the ability to monitor one’s own and others feelings, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action’. (Mayer & Salovey, 1990)

Leadership competence in emotional intelligence is important because it enables leaders to recognise and use key leadership competencies, to lead others, have greater flexibility and creativity, influence others skilfully, achieve our goals, demonstrate commitment and have initiative and optimism.

Thanks to the many challenges and opportunities that arise when working with others, leaders must have a solid understanding of how their emotions and actions affect the people around them. The better a leader relates to and works with others, the more successful he or she will be.
